How to Choose a Niche for Your Beauty Blog
You want to start a blog but you’re not sure if you should write about all things beauty, add in some of your favorite foods and travel destinations, or focus on a specific niche?
Though the idea of starting a beauty blog can be super exciting, the competition is tough. It seems like everyone wants to write about beauty, food or travel these days. I’ll be blunt, it will take more than your enthusiasm to make your blog stand out in this sea of beauty mermaids.
But hey, don’t panic. I’m going to let you in on the easiest way to make your beauty blog stand out and reach the exact audience you want.
Before getting down to business, let’s see what a niche is and why you need to have one.
What is a niche blog?
A niche is a smaller, specialized part of an industry, field, population, etc. For a beauty blog, a niche could be anything from anti–aging solutions, treating oily or dry skin, make-up, nail art etc.
You can have a broader niche such as a blog focused on dermatological problems (acne, oily skin, sensitive or dry skin, rosacea, etc.) or it could be narrowed to only one of these topics. The more filters you add, the more segmented your audience will be.
Why do I even need a niche?
Because it will help you define the goal of your blog.
If you want your blog to be an outlet where you exercise your writing skills or just a hobby, then you could write about anything you want. But if you want to go for a professional look and generate revenue, you should definitely start by defining your blog’s niche and goals.
Think how you search and consume information online. If you want to learn more about makeup, will you subscribe to a blog that talks about everything from babies, travel, pets and what not? Or will you rather go for the blog that knows exactly what brushes to recommend or what foundations are the best depending on the look you try to achieve?
I think you’d probably go with the latter and that’s what most readers would do. And this is important to you because what brings most revenue in blogging is targeted traffic. So, having a niche blog will help you attract the right audience and leverage the targeted traffic to boost your income.
Plus, having multiple niches usually means having a harder time choosing a domain name. Do you think DeliciouslyElla.com would have had the same success if it had been EverythingEllaCanDo.com ?
But isn’t “beauty” a niche?
Maybe ten years ago it was. Today “beauty” can be turned into a vast world of carefully applied highlighter, the best serums to banish wrinkles or how to paint a flamingo on your nails. You need to decide which unicorn you want to ride.
How to define YOUR beauty niche
These 5 steps will point towards the right direction.
Step1: Ask yourself these questions
1) WHO ARE YOU?
Fill in the gap: I am ………………………………
Example: I am a 31 year old woman, with higher education, medium income, living in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania.
Why? Most beauty bloggers started by trying to find solutions to their own skin problems. Most of the times they speak from their own perspective, reflecting their own concerns, fears, ideas and solutions. Most likely, your audience will be people similar to yourself (that may not be entirely accurate but it’s a good place to start and expand from.)
Knowing some basic characteristics of your demographics will help identify the people you’re truly writing for and better target them in future campaigns.
2) WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS?

Example: I love skin care, DIY beauty recipes and k-cosmetics. I’m into personal development and enjoy reading self-help books. I also have a strong interest for digital content, SEO, copywriting and blogging. I’m good with crafts and love to learn & practice foreign languages.
Look at the things you’re passionate about and choose one or two that you feel the most comfortable with. Bear in mind that if you want to be in for the long haul you should choose a topic that you’re really excited about.
3) WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS?
Fill in the gap: I’m good at………………………………
Example: I’m good at writing and researching. I can go into details with any topic that I write about. I learn foreign languages quickly. I’m good at doing stuff with my own two hands, either crocheting, knitting or homemade beauty products. I’m an analytical person so I can come up with a very sensible approach to skin care.
Don’t worry if you don’t have enough experience by now. Just write down what people love about you (if you don’t know ask your friends.) Don’t overthink it, just write freely. Even the smallest things can reveal a path to follow.
4) WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS YOU CAN SOLVE?

Example: I can help others choose products that work for oily skin. I can give relevant and self tested beauty advice. I know a lot about SEO and I can teach others from scratch.

Step 2: Turn your interests into keywords
So you've identified a few things you're interested or passionate about. Now let's see how people actually search for these things. Let's convert them into keywords that Google can identify.
Let’s say you have a passion for skin care products. Google can help you suggest relevant keywords (that people are searching for) similar or connected to “skin care products.” All you need to do is open the Google Keyword Planner (free).
Select the first option “Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or keywords.”
Fill in the fields and click “Get ideas.”
Google will suggest a full list of keywords that people actually search for.
Write these down and keep them. You'll need them for your SEO.
Step 3: Check your keywords with Google Trends
Google Trends is a free tool you can use to check how a keyword is doing in terms of popularity over time. If you already have a set of keywords you want to go for, checking them with Google Trends is a great idea to see if they’re rising in popularity or not.
For example, you can see that the keyword “DIY lip scrub" is slowly decreasing in popularity.
Step 4: Turn your broad & competitive keywords into long-tail keywords.
You might have noticed by now your keywords may be too general and very competitive. That means it's going to be very hard to get your content ranked for these keywords (unless you're planning to invest big.) So what to do? You have better chances to rank for long-tail keywords. What are those?
Simply put, long-tail keywords are keywords with more words. If “beauty” or “beauty products” are broad keywords, a long-tail keyword would be “beauty products for oily skin,” or “DIY beauty products for acne.” They are extremely encouraged because everyone seems to be thinking that having long-tail keyword would help you rank higher for that search term. Which is, in parts, true (we'll come back to it in a sec.)
So next, take your general beauty keywords (ex. "organic products") and narrow them down to a specific ingredient, application ("argan oil organic products for acne") or a specific target group ("argan oil organic products for women over 40")
While long-tail keywords are easier to rank for, unfortunately for us, beauty bloggers, all keywords are competitive, even the long-tail ones. For every keyword (broad or long-tail) you choose, chances are a bigger website already covered it.

Step 5: Does this niche have a potential to generate revenue?
I know this is a popular topic. How to make money off my blog? But you know what? Don't just focus on getting quick cash. Focus on what makes you happy. Yes, there are many tried & tested methods, a lot of success recipes but there are also these facts:
1) Even if you go with the tried and tested methods (affiliate links, influencer marketing, working with brands, etc) there's no guarantee YOU will be successful.
2) Even if you don't follow what others are doing, you can still be successful on your own.
One thing is for sure:
As long as you do what you love, success will follow, eventually.
And this is a fact. So don't worry about money. Worry about finding your true identity & authenticity. The blogging industry is full of sponsored posts, partnerships, gigs and deals. What we lack is authenticity. Focus on building an authentic voice, brand or product.
And while you're at it, you might find some niches more profitable than others. So give this some though:
Do you have the resources to sustain a blog in this niche?
How easy would it be to attract advertisers?
Consider the available affiliate programs and CPA offers
Are other people in this niche making money?
What is the competition like?
